Glór na nGael – Voice of the Irish Welcomes New Convenor and Announces 35th Anniversary Celebration
Melbourne, Australia – 25 September 2024 – Glór na nGael - Voice of the Irish, the long-standing Irish radio program on 3ZZZ Melbourne Ethnic Community Radio, is excited to announce a significant change in leadership as it prepares to celebrate its 35th anniversary this November. While the program had several convenors in its early years, this marks the first change in leadership in many years as it appoints a new convenor and introduces the committee that will guide Glór na nGael into the future.
The outgoing convenor, Eugene O’Rourke OAM, who has been involved with the program since its inception in 1989, stepped down at the Irish Broadcasting Group’s AGM in August. Eugene has played a pivotal role in connecting the Irish community in Melbourne with their culture and heritage. His dedication over the past 35 years has made Glór na nGael an essential part of Melbourne’s Irish community.
Alongside Eugene, a dedicated team of volunteers has worked tirelessly to keep the program running. Special recognition goes to Graeme Anderson, who has been the program’s treasurer and handled the operational side for many years, ensuring the smooth day-to-day functioning of the show.
The newly appointed convenor, Karen Fogarty, will now lead the program alongside a strong committee of dedicated individuals:
Mary Ann Farren, Deputy Convenor
Dominic McCann, Treasurer
De Arne Leonard, Secretary
Brian Gillespie, Committee Member
Christina Moloughney, Committee Member
Marie Brouder, Committee Member
Mary McBride, Committee Member
These individuals will bring fresh ideas while maintaining the program’s core focus on Irish culture, language, and music. “I’m honoured to take on the role of convenor alongside such a talented and committed team,” said Karen Fogarty. “Together, we will continue to honour the incredible legacy of Glór na nGael while working to expand and modernise the program for future generations.”
To celebrate this milestone, Glór na nGael will host a 35th-anniversary event on 10 November 2024. The celebration will honour Eugene and Graeme and the many broadcasters and volunteers who have contributed to the program over the years. Attendees can look forward to live Irish music, cultural performances, and tributes to those who have shaped Glór na nGael.
“We are grateful to Eugene, Graeme, and all the past and present broadcasters who have kept the Irish voice strong in Melbourne,” said Karen. “This anniversary event is a chance to celebrate their contributions and reflect on how much the program has meant to the Irish community.”
